Originality.ai is the best AI content detector for agencies and publishers since it’s specifically designed for them. Industry leaders like Surfer, Neil Patel, Flippa, Walmart, and Content Refined are just some of the many who use Originality.ai’s services.

Besides AI, the platform also checks for plagiarism in your content. Here’s what Originality.ai claims about its accuracy:

These claims really intrigued me. So, I decided to give it a shot.

What to Expect From Originality.ai

To test Originality.ai, I uploaded some AI-written content for detection. The interface was simple and easy to use, allowing me to copy and paste my text, upload a file, or paste from a URL.

I made ChatGPT write a piece of text for me. Here’s what it was: 

I copied and pasted the text to Originality.ai to see the result.

One quick hack to save credit on Originality.ai is to uncheck the plagiarism checker at the second box and run the AI check alone.

Here, you can see that the tool has highlighted the whole text as 100% AI. That’s accurate. 

One thing to note about Originality.ai is that it doesn’t tell you how much of your content is AI-written. Instead, it tells you how probable it is that the content is written by an AI or a human.  

You can see this probability with the highlighting color keys: 

Then, I entered one of my previously written (100% human) samples in the Originality AI content detector to check if it recognized it as human. And it did, tagging it as 100% Original.

However, this wasn’t the case with all my content. In some instances, Originality.ai gave false positives, highlighting human-written text to be likely written by AI. For example, it gave me a 35% AI score for another article below, although it was fully human-written.

Winston AI also has a plagiarism checker, but the feature is only available for elite plans. One thing I really liked about the tool is you can add a document author and a document title. That makes it easy to find your desired document later on.

Winston AI claims to have a 99.6% accuracy rate because it updates with every noticeable LLM (Language Model) change. So, let’s see how valid this claim is.

What to Expect from Winston AI

Again, I used the exact content ChatGPT wrote for me earlier. The interface was smooth and user-friendly, allowing me to copy and paste the text or upload a file. I did the former.

Winston AI showed the following results, accurately detecting 100% AI writing.

Winston AI also shows an AI prediction map with highlighting colors, where you can see which sentences are AI-written and which are human.

Next, I checked it with human content to see how it does in that domain. I used one of my older articles, less than 800 words, as a sample. Winston detected it to be 51% AI-written, which isn’t correct.

I used another article that had gotten a 0% AI rating on Originality.ai (above) to check if Winston did better with long-form content. The result was somewhat more accurate at 77% but still didn’t reflect 100% human writing.

On the GPTZero website, I saw that the tool can detect AI models like ChatGPT, GPT4, Bard, and LLaMa. Like Winston AI, GPTZero also lets you upload files or paste text. It supports several formats like .txt, .docx, .doc, and .pdf.

I pasted the same ChatGPT text that I used earlier. GPTZero showed me that 6 of 6 sentences are likely AI-generated. 

It wasn’t as accurate as Originality.ai and Winston AI, though, since it said the text could be a “mix of human’’ and AI text. But when it highlighted the AI-written text, it covered the whole paragraph. So, that’s legit. 

I then checked it with human content. Again, I used my handwritten article as a sample. GPTZero’s results were quite accurate, with low false positives.

Just a heads up: you can only detect 2,500 characters at once on the free plan. 

What to Expect From Content at Scale AI Detector

Using the tool is no rocket science; you just have to copy and paste the content you want to check. I pasted the exact text from ChatGPT as before, and Content At Scale accurately detected it as AI content.

I also made Bard explain artificial intelligence to me. Then, I pasted that content into the Content at Scale AI detector to see if it works similarly for different AI tools. The result was consistent. 

I checked the tool with human content, too. It did not disappoint. 

I ran a few more detections to see if the tool was consistent. And in most cases, it was.

The first thing I noticed about Undetectable.ai is that it checks your content based on purpose and readability.

I entered the exact text I used to test the previous tools. Shockingly, Undetectable.ai said that the content appeared human.

I decided to give the tool another shot. So, I generated 200 words about AI detectors from ChatGPT. Here’s what I got:

The developers claim they have used over 1.5 billion parameters and data from various sources to train their model. Crossplag AI detects AI content through a mix of natural language processing and machine learning algorithms. 

What to Expect From Crossplag AI 

You know what’s coming: test time. I used the ChatGPT output from the previous example. The results from Crossplag AI were quite disappointing because the tool showed that the content was “mainly written by a human.’’

One thing I’ve noticed in my tests so far is that some tools aren’t sensitive enough to detect AI content in smaller word counts. So, I made ChatGPT write me a 250-word text about global warming and checked that on Crossplag AI. The tool correctly identified it as AI content this time. 

As you can see, the tool has an AI ‘’meter’’ that shows the possibility of the content being written with an AI tool. The higher the percentage, the higher the likelihood of it being AI-written. 

Then, I checked one of my articles of less than 500 words on Crossplag AI, too. The result was disappointing. 

Again, I figured the false positive was due to the shorter word count. So, I entered a longer chunk of text. Lo and behold! The tool detected it right this time.

What to Expect From Writer AI Content Detector 

You can only check 1,500 characters at a time on this tool. So, I decided to use the smaller ChatGPT result — the same one I used for Originality AI. The results were disappointing at 100% human-written.

In the second attempt, I used a longer content from Bard. This time, the tool was more accurate at 88% AI-written. 

I believe that since the AI content detector is made to be used as an API, it works best in that format. If you merely paste content in the detection tool, especially shorter word counts, the likelihood of false positives will be high. 

But when I analyzed human content, Writer AI Content Detector was better at detecting it, even with shorter word counts. 

I tested it with another self-written, longer piece of text to confirm it, and it’s accurate.

Web publishers may use an AI detector tool to ensure relevance in their content. After all, they don’t want Google to kick off their content to the back pages of search results.

AI-written content also tends to be mediocre. It lacks the human depth and creativity to make content engaging and valuable to its readers. So, businesses must use AI content detectors to screen out low-quality content and maintain their brand’s reputation.

Just know that 100% accuracy is not possible. Don’t waste your time looking for a detector that can achieve this precision.

Some AI detectors are free. Others have paid plans. Most of these plans have a set word count you can check for free during the month. Check if the cost is worth it for your business.
