9 Best AI Content Detectors in 2024 With Test Results

Google seems somewhat okay with AI-written content, but the search engine does not want you to churn out robotic content. Instead, it wants content that meets the EEAT guidelines of 2023.
As a blog or website owner, you don’t want your content writers to piggyback off artificial intelligence without supervision. But how do you find out if your content is AI-written? An AI content detector can help.
Here’s a list of the best AI content detectors that actually work. I’ve tested these tools with both AI and human-written content and will show you the results to give you an idea of their accuracy.
What are the Best AI Content Detectors in 2024?
When I say the ”best AI content detector,” I judge the tool based on the following criteria:
- Accuracy: high or low false positives
- Functionality: highlighting AI text, plagiarism checker, batch inputs, etc
- Ease of use
- Speed, and
- Affordability
See below my top picks for the best AI content detectors with test results.
1. Originality.ai – Best for Publishers, Agencies and Writers

Originality.ai is the best AI content detector for agencies and publishers since it’s specifically designed for them. Industry leaders like Surfer, Neil Patel, Flippa, Walmart, and Content Refined are just some of the many who use Originality.ai’s services.
Besides AI, the platform also checks for plagiarism in your content. Here’s what Originality.ai claims about its accuracy:
- 99% accuracy on GPT-4
- 83% on ChatGPT
- around 2% false positives
These claims really intrigued me. So, I decided to give it a shot.
What to Expect From Originality.ai
To test Originality.ai, I uploaded some AI-written content for detection. The interface was simple and easy to use, allowing me to copy and paste my text, upload a file, or paste from a URL.
I made ChatGPT write a piece of text for me. Here’s what it was:

I copied and pasted the text to Originality.ai to see the result.
One quick hack to save credit on Originality.ai is to uncheck the plagiarism checker at the second box and run the AI check alone.

Here, you can see that the tool has highlighted the whole text as 100% AI. That’s accurate.
One thing to note about Originality.ai is that it doesn’t tell you how much of your content is AI-written. Instead, it tells you how probable it is that the content is written by an AI or a human.
You can see this probability with the highlighting color keys:

Then, I entered one of my previously written (100% human) samples in the Originality AI content detector to check if it recognized it as human. And it did, tagging it as 100% Original.

However, this wasn’t the case with all my content. In some instances, Originality.ai gave false positives, highlighting human-written text to be likely written by AI. For example, it gave me a 35% AI score for another article below, although it was fully human-written.

Key Features of Originality.ai
- AI and plagiarism detector
- Detection for multiple LLM models
- Team support
- API Access
- Website scanner
Originality.ai Pros
- High accuracy
- Team collaboration
- Support for fact-checking
- Multilingual support of 15 languages
- Low false positives
Originality.ai Cons
- Sometimes, it highlights human text as “likely to be AI-written.”
Originality.ai Pricing

- Free Trial: 50 free credits on sign-up
- Base Subscription: $14.95 per month for 2000 credits (with 1 month expiry)
- Pay-as-you-go: $30 for 3000 credits (with 2 years expiry)
2. Winston AI – Best for Content Writers and Educators

Winston AI is an AI detection tool made for web publishers, writers, educators, and businesses. According to the developers, Winston AI can detect content written using GPT-4, ChatGPT, Bard, and other similar AI models.
Winston AI also has a plagiarism checker, but the feature is only available for elite plans. One thing I really liked about the tool is you can add a document author and a document title. That makes it easy to find your desired document later on.
Winston AI claims to have a 99.6% accuracy rate because it updates with every noticeable LLM (Language Model) change. So, let’s see how valid this claim is.
What to Expect from Winston AI
Again, I used the exact content ChatGPT wrote for me earlier. The interface was smooth and user-friendly, allowing me to copy and paste the text or upload a file. I did the former.
Winston AI showed the following results, accurately detecting 100% AI writing.

Winston AI also shows an AI prediction map with highlighting colors, where you can see which sentences are AI-written and which are human.

Next, I checked it with human content to see how it does in that domain. I used one of my older articles, less than 800 words, as a sample. Winston detected it to be 51% AI-written, which isn’t correct.

I used another article that had gotten a 0% AI rating on Originality.ai (above) to check if Winston did better with long-form content. The result was somewhat more accurate at 77% but still didn’t reflect 100% human writing.

Key Features of Winston AI
- Plagiarism checking and detailed reports
- AI prediction map for better identification of AI sentences
- Readability score
- Email and chat support
Winston AI Pros
- Accurate plagiarism detection
- Easy-to-use interface

3. GPTZero – Best for Teachers

GPTZero was developed by Edward Tian, a student at Princeton University, to detect AI-written text.
Unlike some other AI detectors, GPTZero predicts AI writing based on ”perplexity,” which is a metric to measure a text’s randomness. The tool also detects burstiness, which determines patterns in the text that could be linked to AI writing.
Tian has revealed that he trained the AI detector on AI-generated and human-written text, allowing GPTZero to better distinguish between the two. GPTZero also has an API that you can integrate into your own programs or applications.
What to Expect from GPTZero
On the GPTZero website, I saw that the tool can detect AI models like ChatGPT, GPT4, Bard, and LLaMa. Like Winston AI, GPTZero also lets you upload files or paste text. It supports several formats like .txt, .docx, .doc, and .pdf.
I pasted the same ChatGPT text that I used earlier. GPTZero showed me that 6 of 6 sentences are likely AI-generated.

It wasn’t as accurate as Originality.ai and Winston AI, though, since it said the text could be a “mix of human’’ and AI text. But when it highlighted the AI-written text, it covered the whole paragraph. So, that’s legit.
I then checked it with human content. Again, I used my handwritten article as a sample. GPTZero’s results were quite accurate, with low false positives.

Key Features of GPTZero
- Ability to do batch file scans
- Plagiarism scanning
- API Access
GPTZero Pros
- Comprehensive result viewing in the dashboard
- Color-coded highlights to outline human and AI sections
- Detailed writing report
- Low false positives
GPTZero Cons
- No multilingual support
GPTZero Pricing

- Free: to scan up to 10,000 words per month
- Essential: $10 per month with up to 150,000 words scan
- Premium: $16 per month with up to 300,000 words scan and plagiarism scan
4. Content at Scale AI Detector – Best for AI Detection and AI Writing

Claiming to have a 98% accuracy rate, Content at Scale AI Detector detects AI content from various sources, including Bard, Claude, GPT4, and ChatGPT. The tool’s newest Pro version also humanizes the AI-detected content, making it more natural and conversational.

Just a heads up: you can only detect 2,500 characters at once on the free plan.
What to Expect From Content at Scale AI Detector
Using the tool is no rocket science; you just have to copy and paste the content you want to check. I pasted the exact text from ChatGPT as before, and Content At Scale accurately detected it as AI content.

I also made Bard explain artificial intelligence to me. Then, I pasted that content into the Content at Scale AI detector to see if it works similarly for different AI tools. The result was consistent.

I checked the tool with human content, too. It did not disappoint.

I ran a few more detections to see if the tool was consistent. And in most cases, it was.
Here’s another example:

However, Content At Scale highlights sentences with colors ranging from “very robotic” to “reads as if it is human written.” So, you may notice that it highlights some sentences as AI in human written content and vice-versa.
Key Features of Content at Scale AI Detector

The tool has also partnered with many Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Blackboard, Moodle, and Canvas to help instructors check their students’ work for plagiarism.
What to Expect from Copyleaks
For Copyleaks, I asked ChatGPT to write a 200-word piece on AI content detectors. I put the output in Copyleaks to see the tool’s detection capabilities.

It tagged it as AI content, and here is another example with longer content:

Then, I entered my own human content to see how Copyleaks performs. In just a few seconds, Copyleaks showed me it was human text:

I tried it with longer content, too, and it was accurate.

Undetectable.ai is an AI detection tool that can also humanize AI text. It has been featured in many publications, like Fox News, Buzzfeed, CBS, Business Insider, and ABC.
For now, the tool manages 10,000 characters at a time. You can paste your AI-generated text. The tool’s algorithm will detect if it is AI-generated or written by a human. It can detect text written by AI writing tools like GPT3, GPT4, Claude, and Bard.
You may use Undetectable.ai to rewrite your AI content and make it sound more human to bypass many of the AI detectors in this list.
What to Expect From Undetectable.ai
The first thing I noticed about Undetectable.ai is that it checks your content based on purpose and readability.
I entered the exact text I used to test the previous tools. Shockingly, Undetectable.ai said that the content appeared human.

I decided to give the tool another shot. So, I generated 200 words about AI detectors from ChatGPT. Here’s what I got:

Then, I entered this content into Undetectable.ai, and it detected the content as AI-written this time.

I decided to check the Humanize feature of the tool. For my test, I only made the tool humanize the first paragraph. Here’s what it wrote for me:

When I checked the tool with my human-written content, it did a better job detecting it as human-written.

It was pretty accurate the second time I tried it with a longer text, too.

Key Features of Undetectable.ai
- AI detection and humanizing capabilities

What to Expect From Sapling AI Content Detector
According to the information on the Sapling AI Content Detector website, the tool’s detection capabilities get better after 50 words. So, I decided to make ChatGPT write me two more sentences. This is what it was:

Then, I checked the text on Sapling AI Content Detector. Here’s what the tool showed me:

As you can see, it flagged the whole content as 100% fake. At the bottom, it also had an Overall Text box highlighting which sentences were AI-written.

It was pretty accurate with human-written content, too, saying it’s 0% fake.

Key Features of Sapling AI Content Detector

8. Crossplag AI – Best for Academic Users

Crossplag AI is a simple and accurate content detector mainly for academic users. But writers and web publishers can also use it.
It doesn’t have any additional bells and whistles; instead, it’s a simple tool that does the basic job of detecting AI content.
The developers claim they have used over 1.5 billion parameters and data from various sources to train their model. Crossplag AI detects AI content through a mix of natural language processing and machine learning algorithms.
What to Expect From Crossplag AI
You know what’s coming: test time. I used the ChatGPT output from the previous example. The results from Crossplag AI were quite disappointing because the tool showed that the content was “mainly written by a human.’’

One thing I’ve noticed in my tests so far is that some tools aren’t sensitive enough to detect AI content in smaller word counts. So, I made ChatGPT write me a 250-word text about global warming and checked that on Crossplag AI. The tool correctly identified it as AI content this time.

As you can see, the tool has an AI ‘’meter’’ that shows the possibility of the content being written with an AI tool. The higher the percentage, the higher the likelihood of it being AI-written.
Then, I checked one of my articles of less than 500 words on Crossplag AI, too. The result was disappointing.

Again, I figured the false positive was due to the shorter word count. So, I entered a longer chunk of text. Lo and behold! The tool detected it right this time.

Key Features of Crossplag AI
- AI content detection
- Crossplag for Individuals
- Crossplag for Education
Crossplag AI Pros
- Easy to use with meter-level
- Has a cross-lingual plagiarism checker
Crossplag AI Cons
- Highly inaccurate for smaller word counts
- Only supports English
Crossplag AI Pricing

- Free trial: 10 credits or 1000 words
- Pay as you go: €9.95 for 50 credits or 5000 words
9. Writer AI Content Detector – Best for App Integration

Writer AI Content Detector is the best AI content detector tool for integration since it integrates seamlessly with Chrome, Figma, Contentful, and other third-party services. The integration feature lets users quickly detect AI-generated content on any platform, making it a valuable tool for content creators and editors.
Alternatively, you can paste text in the text box on the dashboard or enter a URL to check for AI content. The tool will then extract the first 1,500 characters of the content for analysis.
What to Expect From Writer AI Content Detector
You can only check 1,500 characters at a time on this tool. So, I decided to use the smaller ChatGPT result — the same one I used for Originality AI. The results were disappointing at 100% human-written.

In the second attempt, I used a longer content from Bard. This time, the tool was more accurate at 88% AI-written.

I believe that since the AI content detector is made to be used as an API, it works best in that format. If you merely paste content in the detection tool, especially shorter word counts, the likelihood of false positives will be high.
But when I analyzed human content, Writer AI Content Detector was better at detecting it, even with shorter word counts.

I tested it with another self-written, longer piece of text to confirm it, and it’s accurate.

Key Features of Writer AI Content Detector
- AI Content Detector
- Generative AI
- AI templates
- Style guide template
Writer AI Content Detector Pros
- Simple interface
- AI generation ability
- Chrome and Figma integration
Writer AI Content Detector Cons
- High false positives for shorter content
- No highlighting for human vs AI content
Writer AI Content Detector Pricing
- Free trial
- Pricing available upon request
What Is the Purpose of an AI Content Detector?
There could be quite a few. As an educator, you might want to use an AI detector tool to ensure that students are not making ChatGPT do their assignments.
Web publishers may use an AI detector tool to ensure relevance in their content. After all, they don’t want Google to kick off their content to the back pages of search results.
AI-written content also tends to be mediocre. It lacks the human depth and creativity to make content engaging and valuable to its readers. So, businesses must use AI content detectors to screen out low-quality content and maintain their brand’s reputation.
How do you choose the best AI Content Detector for your business?
I’ve tested nine AI detectors for you above. By now, you should have somewhat of an idea of how these detectors work, along with their strengths and weaknesses. However, you may still be wondering which detector is the best fit for your business. Here are some features I think you should consider.
Accuracy
Of course, you want an AI detector that is highly accurate in detecting and classifying content. So, my first advice would be to look for a detector with a low false alarm rate. It means the detector should have a low tendency to flag content as AI-written when it is human-written.
Just know that 100% accuracy is not possible. Don’t waste your time looking for a detector that can achieve this precision.
Cost
Some AI detectors are free. Others have paid plans. Most of these plans have a set word count you can check for free during the month. Check if the cost is worth it for your business.
Additional Features
Some AI detectors have additional features, too. For example, Content At Scale humanizes AI-written content for you, and it’s one of the best long-form AI writers.
Similarly, Originality.ai has a plagiarism checker. Some AI detectors also come as extensions, while others have APIs. If you want more functionality, look for such features, too.
Takeaway
What I’ve concluded from this review that the best AI content detector will differ for each use case. One thing I can say for sure, though: no AI detector is entirely accurate. They all slip up sometimes.
You can use them as a tool for your convenience and weed out bad actors among your writers, but the final decision should always be made by a human.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do AI Content Detectors Work?
Think of them as giant spell checkers. They use natural language processing and machine learning algorithms to detect patterns in text and determine if it was written by a human or AI.
How Accurate Are AI Content Detectors?
The accuracy of AI content detectors varies depending on the specific technology and use case. Some can achieve high levels of accuracy, while others may still struggle with certain types of content. With time, these detectors will get better, though. You should always use your judgment and not rely solely on AI detectors.
Can AI Tools Replace Human Writers?
While AI technology has advanced significantly, it cannot completely replace human writers. That’s because they follow a set pattern rather than using creativity. They can surely assist in the writing process, but they can’t bring the emotional intelligence and personal touch that humans can.
